Why this applies to Amobarbital

Amobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Bitter Almond interacts with.

Bitter almond and its oil contain amygdalin, which is hydrolyzed to toxic hydrocyanic acid. This can cause CNS depression and respiratory failure.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Amobarbital (Amytal) is a barbiturate, and barbiturates already slow down your brain and breathing. That's how they calm you and help with sleep. Bitter almond is a different concern: it contains a compound that the body turns into cyanide, which also depresses the nervous system and can interfere with breathing. So in theory, putting the two together could stack those slowing effects, leaving you extra drowsy, foggy, or with dangerously shallow breathing.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, not from real cases. Still, bitter almond is genuinely toxic and shouldn't be taken at all. If you're on amobarbital, please skip bitter almond and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amobarbital page

“Amobarbital (Amytal) is a barbiturate, a strong sedative, and the real hazard on this page comes from stacking anything else that quiets the brain on top of it. Nearly three quarters of the 107 flagged ingredients can deepen its sedation, from alcohol in any form (beer and wine both carry the highest rating) to kava and GHB, and at the…”

About Bitter Almond

What is Bitter Almond?

Bitter Almond
  • Cough suppressant
  • Muscle spasms (antispasmodic)
  • Itching and skin conditions
  • Flavoring agent
  • Sedative or 'narcotic' effects

Bitter almond is a variety of almond that contains amygdalin, a compound the body converts into cyanide, making it potentially poisonous. Because of this serious toxicity risk, bitter almond should not be eaten or used internally, and there is no reliable proof it treats any health condition. If you want almond's nutrition, choose ordinary sweet almonds instead.
