Bitter almond and its oil contain amygdalin, which is hydrolyzed to toxic hydrocyanic acid. This can cause CNS depression and respiratory failure.

Here's the simple version: Temazepam (Restoril) already slows down your brain to help you fall asleep. Bitter almond contains a compound (amygdalin) that the body turns into cyanide, and in theory that can also depress the nervous system and even slow your breathing. Stacking two things that calm the brain could, on paper, deepen those effects, meaning more next-day grogginess, heavy drowsiness, dizziness, or slowed breathing.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances behave, not something proven in real patients. The bigger issue is that bitter almond is genuinely toxic and shouldn't be taken internally at all. Please skip it and stick with ordinary sweet almonds, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
