Diphenhydramine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Bitter Almond interacts with.

Theoretically, bitter almond oil may have additive effects with other CNS depressants.
Bitter almond and its oil contain amygdalin, which is hydrolyzed to toxic hydrocyanic acid. This can cause CNS depression and respiratory failure.

Here's the simple version: diphenhydramine (Benadryl) already has a strong calming, sleepy side to it. It slows down your nervous system, which is exactly why it makes people drowsy. Bitter almond is a different story. The amygdalin in it can turn into cyanide in your body, and on top of being genuinely poisonous, that process can also depress the nervous system and breathing.

Stack the two and you could, in theory, feel extra groggy, foggy, or short of breath. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these chemicals behave, not proven cases. Honestly, the bigger issue is that bitter almond simply isn't safe to take internally at all. Skip it, choose ordinary sweet almonds, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
