Topiramate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Bitter Almond interacts with.

Theoretically, bitter almond oil may have additive effects with other CNS depressants.
Bitter almond and its oil contain amygdalin, which is hydrolyzed to toxic hydrocyanic acid. This can cause CNS depression and respiratory failure.

Here's the simple version: topiramate can already slow down the central nervous system, leaving some people feeling drowsy, foggy, slowed in their thinking, or unsteady. Bitter almond is a different concern. It contains amygdalin, which your body can turn into cyanide, a true poison that can depress the nervous system and breathing. The worry on file is that stacking these two could add up and deepen that sedating, slowing effect.

This is a theoretical concern based on how these substances behave, not on solid human studies. The bigger issue, honestly, is that bitter almond simply isn't safe to take internally at all. If you want almonds, stick with ordinary sweet almonds. Please don't change your topiramate, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any new supplement.

About Topiramate

What Is Topiramate Used For?

Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia

  • Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
