Here's the simple version: dexmethylphenidate (Focalin) is already a stimulant. It speeds up parts of your brain and body to help with focus, and one of its known effects is bumping up heart rate and blood pressure. Bitter orange contains synephrine, which is also a mild stimulant. So when you stack the two together, you're essentially adding fuel to a fire that's already lit.

What that can look like in real life is a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping. This concern is mostly theoretical and rated moderate, so it isn't a guaranteed problem, but it's worth taking seriously, especially if you have any heart issues or high blood pressure. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than stopping anything on your own.

What Is Dexmethylphenidate Used For?

Brand name: Focalin

Dexmethylphenidate — available as tablets (Focalin, Dexmethylphenidate Hydrochloride) and extended-release capsules (Focalin XR, Dexmethylphenidate Hydrochloride Extended-Release) — is approved to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in both children and adults.

The extended-release capsule formulations are not recommended for children younger than 6 years old, because younger children tend to have higher drug exposure in their bodies and a greater chance of side effects such as weight loss compared to older children at the same dose.
