Why this applies to Dapagliflozin

Dapagliflozin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the simple version: blond psyllium is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your gut alongside a pill, it can sometimes grab onto that medicine and change how much of it gets absorbed. With dapagliflozin (Farxiga), this is mostly a theoretical concern. We don't have solid studies showing psyllium throws off Farxiga specifically, and any effect rated here is minor.

Still, to play it safe, a good habit is to take your psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes after your dapagliflozin, so the fiber isn't competing with it for absorption. If they were taken together and absorption dropped a little, the main worry would simply be slightly less blood sugar control. Nothing dramatic, but worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor to set up your timing.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. What Is Dapagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Farxiga

Dapagliflozin is used for several serious conditions. It helps improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise). It also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is additionally approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization, and urgent visits due to heart failure in adults with heart failure — and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, including reducing the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular death, in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of getting worse.
