Why this applies to Fluconazole

Fluconazole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the simple version: psyllium is a gel-forming fiber, and once it swells up in your gut it can sometimes grab onto whatever else is sitting there, including a dose of fluconazole. The concern is mostly about timing, not danger. If the fiber slows or traps some of the medicine, a little less may get absorbed, which could mean your antifungal doesn't work quite as well against that yeast or fungal infection.

To be honest, this is largely theoretical for fluconazole, and the evidence is weak. An easy fix covers it: take your fluconazole first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. That keeps them from mixing in your stomach. If you take both regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist so we can confirm the spacing works for you.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but always start low and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Fluconazole

What Is Fluconazole Used For?

Brand names: Diflucan, Diflucan Injection

Fluconazole treats infections caused by Candida and Cryptococcus fungi. Diflucan tablets and oral fluconazole tablets and suspension are approved to treat vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis), thrush in the mouth or throat (oropharyngeal candidiasis), and yeast infections of the esophagus. All forms — tablets, oral suspension, and injection — are used for cryptococcal meningitis (a serious fungal brain infection). In smaller studies, fluconazole has also shown effectiveness against Candida urinary tract infections, peritonitis (infection in the abdomen), and serious systemic (bloodstream and organ) Candida infections.

Fluconazole is also used to prevent candidiasis in people undergoing bone marrow transplants who receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Note that vaginal candidiasis is an approved use for the tablets and Diflucan oral products, but not for the injection or oral suspension alone.
