Why this applies to Riluzole

Riluzole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the simple version: blond psyllium is a soluble fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. That gel can grab onto pills sitting in your stomach and intestines, which sometimes slows or lowers how much medicine gets absorbed. With riluzole, this is mostly a theoretical concern, and it's rated minor. The worry would be that the fiber gel ties up some of your dose, so a little less reaches your bloodstream and the drug works less well for your ALS.

The easy fix is timing. Take your riluzole first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. Riluzole also works best on an empty stomach, so spacing helps both. Nothing to panic over, but please run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor so they can fine-tune it for you.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
