Bridelia and Macitentan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Macitentan

Macitentan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Bridelia interacts with.

Animal research suggests that Bridelia extracts decrease arterial pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of Bridelia with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
Some antihypertensive drugs include nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, Verelan), diltiazem (Cardizem), isradipine (DynaCirc), felodipine (Plendil), amlodipine (Norvasc), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Macitentan (Opsumit) already works to relax and widen your blood vessels to help treat the high pressure in your lungs. Bridelia, in animal studies, also seems to nudge blood pressure downward. So if you use both together, the worry is simply that their effects could stack and drop your blood pressure more than expected.

In real life that might show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint when you stand up, or unusual tiredness. I'll be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical and comes from animal research, not human studies, so we don't really know how big the effect is in people. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and let them know if you feel woozy.
