Olanzapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Bulbine Natalensis interacts with.

Theoretically, Bulbine natalensis stem might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract slightly induces CYP1A2 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates; however, this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the gist for olanzapine (Zyprexa): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to break it down and clear it out. In lab dish studies, Bulbine natalensis seemed to nudge that enzyme to work a little faster. If that held true in people, it could mean your body clears olanzapine a bit quicker, which might leave you with less medication on board and weaker symptom control. Olanzapine is not a prodrug, so faster clearance means less effect, not more.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is purely theoretical, based on test-tube work, never studied in humans, and the effect looked small. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since olanzapine keeps serious conditions stable, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement.

About Olanzapine

What Is Olanzapine Used For?

Brand name: Zyprexa

Olanzapine is used for schizophrenia and for manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder, including long-term maintenance treatment. It can also be added to lithium or valproate for manic or mixed episodes. Oral olanzapine is approved for adults and for teens ages 13 to 17.

Olanzapine for injection (intramuscular) is used for sudden agitation linked to schizophrenia or bipolar I mania in adults. Zyprexa Relprevv, a long-acting injection, is used only for schizophrenia. Oral olanzapine taken together with fluoxetine is used for depressive episodes of bipolar I disorder, as covered in the Symbyax labeling.
