Drug & supplement interaction

Burdock + Dobutamine

Dobutamine brand name: Dobutrex.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Burdock and Dobutamine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Burdock and Dobutamine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Dobutamine and Burdock in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Burdock safety at a glance

Burdock overall Use caution Likely safe as a food and for short-term use in healthy adults, but human safety data are limited.
Pregnancy Avoid Avoid medicinal amounts during pregnancy due to lack of safety data and possible effects on the uterus.
Breastfeeding Avoid Not enough safety information, so avoid medicinal use while breastfeeding.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

Pharmacist analysis

While burdock root has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for a variety of health conditions, its potential interactions with medications have not been well studied. Currently, there is only limited information available.

Burdock contains a variety of different compounds, includin arctigenin, arctiin, beta-eudesmol, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, diarctigenin, inulin, lappaol, tannin, trachelogenin, and sitosterol-beta-D-glucopyranoside, all of which can have a wide range of effects.

One of the only theoretical interactions that have been suggested is with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications, as burdock root may have mild blood-thinning effects. This has only been seen in animal studies, however.

Further research is needed to fully understand the potential interactions between burdock root and medications.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Dobutamine

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Dobutamine is filed under a single classification — oral drugs. Burdock has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) — and none of Dobutamine’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Burdock and Dobutamine May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 2 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

“In one case report, a 38-year-old female developed immune-mediated thrombocytopenia after consuming a "cleansing" tea containing unknown amounts of burdock and yellow dock. The patient presented with bruising, mild weakness, and fatigue, which started 2-3 days after consuming the tea, and was found to have a platelet count of 5,000 per mcL.”

Reported for Burdock but not commonly for Dobutamine: liver problems, trouble passing urine, an allergic reaction and a severe allergic reaction.

Effects for Dobutamine come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Burdock come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 4,905 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Dobutamine that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

This page covers Burdock only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Dobutamine page lists 17 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Coffee Charcoal (moderate), European Mandrake (moderate), Glucomannan (moderate) and Guar Gum (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 7 moderate · 9 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dobutamine page

“Activated charcoal is the one entry here I'd treat as a genuine hazard alongside dobutamine (Dobutrex), a hospital medicine given by IV drip to strengthen a struggling heart. Charcoal binds many drugs and can cut their levels even when the drug isn't taken by mouth, and it's the only major-rated interaction of the 17 on this page.”

About Burdock

What is Burdock?

Burdock
  • Skin conditions like acne and eczema
  • Digestive support
  • Diuretic ('detox') and blood purifier
  • Sore throat and cold symptoms
  • Antioxidant support

Burdock is a traditional herb most often used for skin problems and as a so-called 'blood purifier,' but high-quality human studies are lacking and most claims are not well proven. It is widely eaten as a vegetable and is generally considered low-risk for short-term use in healthy adults, but it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and by people allergic to ragweed or daisy-family plants.

Arctium lappa · Asteraceae · Root, leaves, and seeds (fruit) · Tea, dried root, capsules, tinctures, liquid extracts, and fresh root used as food

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Burdock is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Burdock record says about it on its own.

Burdock: dosing

There is no well-established standard dose of burdock for any medical condition. Amounts vary widely depending on whether you use the fresh root, dried root tea, a tincture, or a capsule. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and start with the lowest suggested amount.

About Dobutamine

What Is Dobutamine Used For?

Brand name: Dobutrex

Dobutamine injection is used when the heart suddenly loses its ability to pump blood effectively — a condition called cardiac decompensation. This can happen because of organic heart disease or as a result of heart surgery. It is given intravenously (through an IV) in a hospital or clinical setting to provide short-term inotropic support, meaning it helps the heart muscle contract more strongly.

Clinical trial experience with intravenous dobutamine extends only up to 48 hours of use. Dobutamine has not been shown to be safe or effective for long-term treatment of heart failure, and long-term use of similar drugs has been linked to increased risk of hospitalization and death.
