Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the connection worth knowing. Doxidan combines casanthranol, a stimulant laxative, with docusate, a stool softener. Like other stimulant laxatives, casanthranol can flush potassium out of your body, especially if you use it often or for a long stretch. Calotropis itself contains heart-acting compounds called cardiac glycosides. When your potassium runs low, those glycosides can hit the heart harder, which raises the odds of toxic effects like an irregular or dangerously slow heartbeat.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, not something proven in studies. Still, calotropis can be genuinely toxic, so I'd steer clear of taking it internally and check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing anything with regular laxative use.

About Calotropis

What is Calotropis?

  • Skin conditions and wounds (traditional, topical)
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Digestive complaints
  • Coughs and respiratory issues
  • Traditional Ayurvedic and folk remedies

Calotropis is a milkweed-family plant long used in traditional medicine, but its milky latex and other parts are potentially toxic and can harm the eyes, skin, and heart. Human evidence for any health benefit is very limited, and the risk of poisoning is real, so it should not be taken internally without expert medical supervision.
