Here's the gist: amiodarone slows down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and that same enzyme helps your body break down THC, the part of cannabis that gets you high. So if you use cannabis while taking amiodarone, the THC may clear out of your system more slowly and build up a bit. That can mean a stronger or longer-lasting high, more drowsiness, dizziness, or a feeling of being more impaired than you expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this one is theoretical, based on how the drug and THC are processed, not on strong studies. Still, amiodarone is a serious heart medication, so don't add or change anything on your own. Please run it by your doctor or pharmacist first.

Theoretically, cannabis may increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that cannabis can inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 enzymes, which might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP3A4 metabolism of testosterone; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Here's the gist for amiodarone: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear it. Lab studies suggest cannabis (especially CBD) can slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let amiodarone build up a little higher than usual, which might mean more of its known effects, like a slow heart rate, dizziness, tiredness, or thyroid and lung issues with long-term use.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's based only on test-tube and animal research, not real patient studies, so we don't truly know how much it matters. That said, amiodarone is a narrow-margin drug for serious heart rhythms, so even small shifts deserve attention. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining the two.

What Is Amiodarone Used For?

Brand names: Pacerone, Cordarone

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
