Lesinurad falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabis interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabis might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the cannabis constituents delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol moderately inhibit the CYP2C9-mediated 7-hydroxylation of S-warfarin in a concentration-dependent manner. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP2C9 metabolism of tolbutamide; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down lesinurad. In lab studies, cannabis compounds like THC and CBD can slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, lesinurad could build up a little higher than usual and lean toward more side effects, things like headache, heartburn, or reflux, and possibly more strain on the kidneys (lesinurad already carries a kidney warning).

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is, though. This is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, not from people actually taking both together, so it may not amount to much. Lesinurad is an active drug, not a prodrug, so the direction points toward stronger effects, not weaker ones. Still, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the angle that matters for this pair: lesinurad (Zurampic) is a mild inducer of the liver enzyme CYP3A4, and the THC in cannabis is partly broken down by that same enzyme. So in theory, lesinurad could speed up how fast your body clears THC, which might make cannabis feel a little weaker or shorter-lasting than you'd expect.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not something proven in real people, and lesinurad is only a weak inducer. It does not make lesinurad itself dangerous or change your gout treatment. If you use cannabis and notice it isn't working the way it used to, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor rather than adjusting anything on your own.

What Is Lesinurad Used For?

Brand name: Zurampic

  • Lesinurad is used in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor to treat hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid) in people with gout (sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints) whose disease is not controlled with their current medication. Lesinurad is in a class of medications called selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors. It works by helping the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body.
