Valbenazine Tosylate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Cannabis interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabis might have additive effects if used with other CNS depressants.
Cannabis can have CNS depressant effects. Combining cannabis with other CNS depressants might result in additive or synergistic effects. A small clinical trial in healthy adults shows that inhaling a high-grade cannabis (Bedrocan International B.V., Veendam, The Netherlands) 100 mg, containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol 21.8% and cannabinol 0.1%, modestly increases subjective feelings of sedation when compared with cannabis alone.

Here's the simple version: both Ingrezza (valbenazine) and cannabis can make you feel sleepy or mentally foggy. When you use them together, those effects can stack up. Valbenazine on its own can already cause drowsiness, tiredness, and sometimes a sense of being off-balance, and adding cannabis (especially THC-heavy products) may make that worse. You might feel more sedated, slower to react, or dizzier than usual.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these two act, not a proven dangerous combination. Still, it's worth taking seriously, particularly when you're driving or doing anything that needs focus. If you use cannabis while taking Ingrezza, please talk with your pharmacist or doctor so they can help you do it safely.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Theoretically, cannabis may increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that cannabis can inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 enzymes, which might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP3A4 metabolism of testosterone; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Here's the basic idea with Ingrezza (valbenazine). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medication down and clear it out. Lab studies suggest cannabis can mildly slow that same enzyme. In theory, that could let valbenazine build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its typical side effects, like sleepiness, dizziness, headache, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is based only on test-tube research, not real patient cases, so the actual effect in people is uncertain and may be small. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you notice more drowsiness or feel off, so they can keep an eye on your dose.

What Is Valbenazine Used For?

Brand name: Ingrezza

Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.

Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
