Cyproheptadine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist of this one: cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin, which in test-tube studies seems to make skin a little more sensitive to sunlight. Cyproheptadine can occasionally do the same thing on its own. So in theory, pairing the two might make you sunburn faster or notice more redness, rash, or irritation after time outdoors.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based on lab research, not real patient cases, and the cilantro you sprinkle on tacos or salsa is very unlikely to cause any trouble. The bigger question mark would be concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil. If you use those, just be sun-smart (sunscreen, hat, shade) and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting them.

What Is Cyproheptadine Used For?

Brand name: Periactin

Cyproheptadine treats a range of allergic conditions, including perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis (year-round or seasonal nasal allergies), vasomotor rhinitis (non-allergic nasal symptoms), and allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, watery eyes caused by allergens or foods). It also helps with allergic skin reactions such as urticaria (hives) and angioedema (skin swelling).

Additional uses include cold urticaria (hives triggered by cold), dermatographism (skin that hives when scratched), and helping to calm allergic reactions to blood or plasma transfusions. It is also used as a supportive therapy alongside epinephrine after a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) has been initially controlled.
