Cnidium and Bromazepam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Bromazepam

Bromazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Cnidium interacts with.

In laboratory research, cnidium has been shown to have sedative and hypnotic effects, possibly related to constituent coumarins. Theoretically, cnidium may potentiate the effects of barbiturates, other sedatives, and anxiolytics.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine, so it already calms the nervous system to ease anxiety. In lab and animal studies, cnidium has shown its own sedative, sleep-promoting effects, likely from coumarin compounds like osthole. Stacked together, the worry is that cnidium could add to bromazepam's calming action, leaving you more drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady than expected. That can be a real concern with driving or older adults at risk of falls.

Keep in mind this is theoretical, based only on test-tube and animal work, not human studies, so we can't say how strongly it happens in real life. Still, since both push in the same sedating direction, it's smart to run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bromazepam page

“Bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety, and because it already slows the brain, anything else with a sedative pull can tip ordinary drowsiness into something dangerous. Eight of the 99 supplement and herbal ingredients here carry a major rating, and those eight are where I would start.”

Cnidium is the dried fruit of an Asian plant long used in traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for skin problems and sexual health.
