Cnidium and Diphenhydramine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Diphenhydramine

Diphenhydramine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Cnidium interacts with.

In laboratory research, cnidium has been shown to have sedative and hypnotic effects, possibly related to constituent coumarins. Theoretically, cnidium may potentiate the effects of barbiturates, other sedatives, and anxiolytics.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: diphenhydramine (Benadryl) already makes most people drowsy. That's actually why it's used as a sleep aid. Cnidium, in lab and animal studies, has shown its own calming, sleep-promoting effects, likely from coumarin compounds like osthole. So the worry is that the two together could pile on, leaving you more sedated than you expected.

In real life, that might mean extra grogginess, heavy fatigue, dizziness, or feeling foggy and slow the next day. I want to be honest, though: this concern comes only from laboratory and animal research, not human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Diphenhydramine is not a prodrug, so it doesn't flip directions here. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Diphenhydramine page

“Diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Simply Sleep) is sedating by design, and most of the 147 supplements and herbal ingredients on this list lean into that. Seventy-eight are sedating substances themselves, alcohol and kava the standouts, and stacking them can slow breathing and reflexes well beyond ordinary drowsiness.”
