Here's the thing to keep on your radar if you're taking Plavix (clopidogrel) and thinking about cod liver oil. Clopidogrel already works by making your platelets less sticky so they don't clump and form clots. The omega-3s (EPA and DHA) in cod liver oil can do a little of the same thing on their own, gently slowing how well platelets stick together. Stack the two and you may nudge your bleeding risk up a notch.

In real life, that could show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums when you brush, or cuts that take longer to stop. Honestly though, this effect was mostly seen at large doses, around 20 to 40 mL a day, and the evidence is on the theoretical side. A normal supplement dose is far less worrisome. Still, since clopidogrel is serious heart medicine, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding cod liver oil.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
