Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal in your gut. Its porous surface can grab onto things, including your dextroamphetamine, before your body fully absorbs it. If the two are sitting in your stomach at the same time, you may take in less of your dose. That could mean weaker symptom control, like more trouble focusing or staying still, or a return of daytime sleepiness if you take it for narcolepsy.

The good news is this is a timing issue, not a hard no. Keeping the two at least a couple of hours apart usually sidesteps the problem. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves rather than firm studies, so don't panic, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Dextroamphetamine Used For?

Brand name: Dexedrine

Dextroamphetamine treats two conditions: ADHD and narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness). It is available in multiple forms — tablets, extended-release capsules, oral solution, and a skin patch — and the approved age ranges vary by product.

Oral tablets (Zenzedi, generic) and oral solutions (Procentra, generic) are approved for ADHD in children as young as 3 years old and for narcolepsy. Extended-release capsules (Dexedrine, generic) are approved for ADHD in children ages 6 to 16 and for narcolepsy. Xelstrym, the transdermal patch, is approved only for ADHD — in adults and children ages 6 and older — and is not indicated for narcolepsy.
