Ergot + Dextroamphetamine
Dextroamphetamine brand name: Dexedrine.
Dextroamphetamine falls into 2 drug categories that Ergot can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Certain ergot alkaloids, such as dihydroergotamine, act as serotonin agonists.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Ergot interacts with whole categories of medication. Dextroamphetamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ergot in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Dextroamphetamine
Dextroamphetamine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine, Xelstrym) and ergot. Dextroamphetamine boosts brain chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine, and it also nudges serotonin upward. Ergot's natural chemicals act on serotonin receptors too. When two things both push on the serotonin system, there's a theoretical chance of too much serotonin activity, called serotonin syndrome. Watch for things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion.
I'll be honest with you, this concern is based on weak, anecdotal reports, not strong studies. Ergot is also toxic and isn't a safe supplement to take on its own. Both ergot and dextroamphetamine can narrow blood vessels and raise blood pressure, so that's another reason for caution. Please don't change anything yourself. Check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
STIMULANT DRUGS
2 of 2Dextroamphetamine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.
Some stimulant drugs include albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), diethylpropion (Tenuate), dopamine, epinephrine, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), and many others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: both of these things squeeze your blood vessels and rev up your system. Dextroamphetamine is a stimulant, so on its own it can already raise your blood pressure, speed up your heart, and tighten blood vessels. Ergot does the same kind of thing in a strong way. Put them together and those vessel-narrowing effects could stack on top of each other.
In real life that might mean higher blood pressure, a racing or pounding heart, headache, or cold, tingly hands and feet from poor circulation. I'll be honest, this warning rests on anecdotal reports rather than solid studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven danger. Crude ergot also isn't safe to take at all on its own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything ergot-related with your dextroamphetamine.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

This page covers Ergot only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Dextroamphetamine page lists 129 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

By severity: 6 major · 100 moderate · 23 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dextroamphetamine page
“Dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine) is a stimulant for ADHD and narcolepsy, and I read this list with genuine wariness. Six of the 129 ingredients rate major, most of them because other stimulants, ephedra being the clearest, pile extra heart rate and blood pressure on top of what the drug already produces.”

About Ergot
What is Ergot?
- Heavy menstrual or uterine bleeding
- Bleeding after childbirth
- Migraine headaches
- Stimulating uterine contractions
Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
About Dextroamphetamine
What Is Dextroamphetamine Used For?
Brand name: Dexedrine
Dextroamphetamine treats ADHD (also called attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity). Some oral forms are also used for narcolepsy, a sleep disorder with sudden, uncontrollable sleepiness.
Uses and age ranges differ by product. Dexedrine and dextroamphetamine extended-release capsules are used for narcolepsy and for ADHD in ages 6 to 16. Zenzedi tablets, dextroamphetamine tablets and the oral solutions (including Procentra) are used for narcolepsy and for ADHD in children ages 3 to 16. Xelstrym skin patch is used only for ADHD, in adults and children 6 and older.
