Meropenem falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Dendrobium interacts with.

The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have convulsant effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with pro-convulsant drugs might increase the risk of seizure. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the thing with meropenem: it's a strong IV antibiotic in the carbapenem family, and these drugs already carry a small, known risk of lowering the seizure threshold, meaning they can make seizures slightly more likely in some people. Dendrobium contains a compound called dendrobine that, in lab and animal studies, has shown convulsant (seizure-triggering) effects.

So on paper, pairing the two could nudge that seizure risk a little higher. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on how the ingredients behave, not on real reports of people having problems. Still, since you're already on a serious infection-fighting drug, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding Dendrobium. Don't change your meropenem on your own.

What Is Meropenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Merrem IV

Meropenem for injection is used intravenously to treat three serious types of bacterial infection: complicated skin and skin structure infections (in adults and children 3 months and older), complicated intra-abdominal infections such as appendicitis and peritonitis (in adults and children of all ages), and bacterial meningitis (in children 3 months and older only).

It works against a range of specific bacteria. Your doctor will choose it based on which bacteria are causing — or are strongly suspected of causing — your infection. Using it only when truly needed helps prevent antibiotic resistance.
