SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS
Why this applies to Quetiapine
Quetiapine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Dendrobium interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the connection worth knowing about. Quetiapine (Seroquel) can slightly lower the seizure threshold, meaning it can make seizures a little easier to trigger in some people. Dendrobium contains a compound called dendrobine that, at least in lab settings, has been reported to provoke convulsions. Put those two together and, in theory, the seizure risk could nudge upward.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on how these substances behave in the lab and not on real cases in people taking both. Seizures with quetiapine are uncommon to begin with. This isn't about quetiapine building up or being cleared faster, it's just two things that lean the same direction. Still, before adding Dendrobium, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you have any seizure history.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Quetiapine page
“Quetiapine (Seroquel) treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, illnesses where an unplanned swing in the drug's blood level has real consequences, and that is why these 199 supplement interactions deserve a careful read rather than a shrug. Most of the risk runs through CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears quetiapine: grapefruit bloc…”

About Dendrobium
What is Dendrobium?
- Dry mouth and thirst
- Supporting digestion
- General tonic/vitality
- Eye and skin health
- Recovery after illness
Dendrobium is a group of orchids long used in traditional Chinese medicine, often to moisten the body and as a general tonic. Human evidence for its modern health claims is very limited, so it should be viewed as a traditional remedy rather than a proven treatment. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding because safety isn't known.
About Quetiapine
What Is Quetiapine Used For?
Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel
Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.
The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
