Methylprednisolone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.

Here's the thing to keep in mind about this pairing. The interaction on file actually runs the opposite way from what people might expect. Methylprednisolone is processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme helps break down evodia's active compounds. So when the two share that pathway, it's the evodia levels that may rise, not your steroid. This is a theoretical concern based only on lab and animal studies, so the real-world risk in people isn't well proven.

I wouldn't expect a big change in how your methylprednisolone works here. Still, since evodia can affect the gut and pain signaling, and steroids carry their own side effects (stomach upset, mood or sleep changes, raised blood sugar), it's smart to run this combination by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body clears methylprednisolone mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test tube studies, evodia appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, methylprednisolone could linger longer and act a bit stronger than expected.

With a corticosteroid, more drug hanging around can mean more of the usual steroid effects, things like trouble sleeping, mood changes, a bigger appetite, fluid retention, or higher blood sugar. The important caveat: this is only lab evidence, and it has never been shown to actually happen in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since evodia isn't a routine supplement, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, especially on longer steroid courses.

What Is Methylprednisolone Used For?

Brand names: Medrol, Medrol Dosepak

Methylprednisolone tablets (Medrol, Methylpred DP) are used to treat a broad set of conditions including endocrine disorders, rheumatic and joint conditions, autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, severe allergic states, skin diseases, eye inflammation, breathing disorders like asthma, blood and kidney diseases, and certain cancers.

Methylprednisolone acetate injection (Depo-Medrol and others) is used by intramuscular injection when oral therapy isn't feasible, and can also be given directly into joints, soft tissue, or lesions to treat local inflammation from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and skin disorders. The injection is not approved for intrathecal (spinal) use.
