Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Figwort interacts with.

Theoretically, overuse of figwort might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking figwort along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the simple version. Hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill, and one of its known quirks is that it can flush potassium out of your body along with the extra fluid. Figwort is thought to have a mild diuretic-like quality of its own, so the worry is that taking both together could nudge your potassium even lower than the HCTZ alone would.

If potassium drops too far, you might notice muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat. I want to be honest, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave on paper rather than real patient studies. Occasional topical or short-term use likely isn't a big deal, but regular figwort supplements are a different story. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't change your HCTZ on your own.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
