Flaxseed + Ofloxacin
Ofloxacin brand names: Oflox, Floxin, Floxin Injection, Floxin Otic.
Flaxseed has a moderate interaction with Ofloxacin. Theoretically, antibiotics might interfere with the metabolism of flaxseed constituents, which could potentially alter the effects of flaxseed.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ofloxacin
Ofloxacin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.
Some potential benefits of flaxseed are thought to be due to its lignan content. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a major lignan precursor, is found in high concentrations in flaxseed. SDG is converted by bacteria in the colon to the lignans enterolactone and enterodiol. Antibiotics alter the flora of the colon, which could theoretically alter the metabolism of flaxseed.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing flaxseed with ofloxacin: this one runs in the opposite direction from most drug interactions. Ofloxacin won't build up or get weaker from flaxseed. Instead, the antibiotic may affect the flaxseed. Your gut bacteria turn flaxseed's lignans into the helpful compounds (enterolactone and enterodiol) your body actually uses. Since ofloxacin kills off some of those bacteria, it could theoretically reduce that conversion and dampen some of flaxseed's benefits during your course of treatment.
This is purely theoretical, based on how things work on paper, not on real patient harm. It's not dangerous, and it doesn't change how well your antibiotic fights infection. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

About Flaxseed
What is Flaxseed?
- Constipation and digestive health
- High cholesterol
- Heart health
- Menopausal symptoms
- Blood sugar support
Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans. It is most reliably helpful for constipation and may modestly lower cholesterol, but evidence for many other uses is mixed or limited. It is generally safe as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Ofloxacin
What Is Ofloxacin Used For?
Brand names: Oflox, Floxin, Floxin Injection, Floxin Otic
Ofloxacin is used in several different forms, each approved for specific infections. The otic (ear) solution treats outer ear infections (otitis externa) in patients 6 months and older, chronic middle ear infections with a ruptured eardrum (chronic suppurative otitis media) in patients 12 and older, and acute middle ear infections in children 1 year and older who have ear tubes. The ophthalmic (eye) solution — including the brand Ocuflox — treats bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers.
Ofloxacin oral tablets treat adults with mild to moderate bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections of the urethra or cervix, mixed urethral/cervical infections, and acute pelvic inflammatory disease. The oral tablet is also used for acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated cystitis, but only when no other treatment options are available, due to serious risk concerns with this drug class.
