Flaxseed and Prazosin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Prazosin

Prazosin falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, flaxseed might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that daily flaxseed consumption, especially for longer than 12 weeks, modestly reduces blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Prazosin lowers your blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, and flaxseed may gently nudge your blood pressure down too. Stack the two together and the effect can add up, which means your pressure could dip a little lower than expected. This isn't about flaxseed changing how your body breaks down prazosin. It's just two things pulling in the same direction.

What might that feel like? Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when you stand up quickly (prazosin is already known for that 'first-dose' drop). The evidence here is theoretical and the blood pressure effect from flaxseed is modest, usually showing up after several weeks of daily use. A sprinkle on your oatmeal is unlikely to be an issue, but if you're using concentrated flaxseed supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prazosin page

“Prazosin (Minipress) relaxes blood vessels by blocking alpha receptors, which is why doctors prescribe it for high blood pressure and, often, for PTSD nightmares. Sudden pressure drops with dizziness or fainting are already its signature risk, so the 137 supplements on this list warrant genuine attention rather than a quick skim.”
