Why this applies to Cephalexin

Cephalexin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotics might interfere with the metabolism of flaxseed constituents, which could potentially alter the effects of flaxseed.
Some potential benefits of flaxseed are thought to be due to its lignan content. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a major lignan precursor, is found in high concentrations in flaxseed. SDG is converted by bacteria in the colon to the lignans enterolactone and enterodiol. Antibiotics alter the flora of the colon, which could theoretically alter the metabolism of flaxseed.

Here's the gist with cephalexin (Keflex) and flaxseed: this one is theoretical and pretty mild. Flaxseed's lignans only become their active forms after friendly gut bacteria in your colon convert them. Since cephalexin is an antibiotic, it can shift those gut bacteria, so in theory you might get a little less of the benefit people take flaxseed for, like its possible effects on cholesterol.

Notice the direction here: it's flaxseed that may work less well, not your antibiotic. Cephalexin keeps killing the bacteria causing your infection just fine. There's no good evidence flaxseed weakens the antibiotic. This is based on how things should work in the body, not strong studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you want to time them apart or have questions, just ask your pharmacist.

Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans. It is most reliably helpful for constipation and may modestly lower cholesterol, but evidence for many other uses is mixed or limited. What Is Cephalexin Used For?

Brand names: Keflex, Keftab, Cephalex, Lexin

Cephalexin treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It is used for respiratory tract infections, ear infections (otitis media), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and genitourinary tract infections — including acute prostatitis.

It works only against bacterial infections — not viruses like colds or flu. Your prescriber should use it only when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, to help prevent antibiotic resistance.
