Flaxseed + Rifampin
Rifampin brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor.
Flaxseed has a moderate interaction with Rifampin. Theoretically, antibiotics might interfere with the metabolism of flaxseed constituents, which could potentially alter the effects of flaxseed.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Rifampin
Rifampin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.
Some potential benefits of flaxseed are thought to be due to its lignan content. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a major lignan precursor, is found in high concentrations in flaxseed. SDG is converted by bacteria in the colon to the lignans enterolactone and enterodiol. Antibiotics alter the flora of the colon, which could theoretically alter the metabolism of flaxseed.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to understand about this particular pairing: it's not that flaxseed changes how rifampin works in your body. It's the other way around. Some of flaxseed's possible benefits come from lignans, which need friendly gut bacteria to be turned into their active forms. Since rifampin is an antibiotic that shifts the balance of bacteria in your colon, it could theoretically blunt some of flaxseed's effects.
I want to be honest that this is only a theory based on how things work on paper, not from real patient studies. Your TB or meningitis treatment with rifampin should still work fine, and flaxseed as a food source of fiber is unlikely to cause problems. If you're taking flaxseed as a concentrated supplement, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Flaxseed
What is Flaxseed?
- Constipation and digestive health
- High cholesterol
- Heart health
- Menopausal symptoms
- Blood sugar support
Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans. It is most reliably helpful for constipation and may modestly lower cholesterol, but evidence for many other uses is mixed or limited. It is generally safe as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Rifampin
What Is Rifampin Used For?
Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor
Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis. It is always used as part of a combination of TB medicines, not on its own.
It also treats asymptomatic meningococcal carriers. These are people who carry the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis in the nose and throat without being sick. Rifampin is not used to treat an actual meningococcal infection.
Rifampin capsules are taken by mouth. Rifadin IV and Rifampin for Injection are given through a vein for the initial treatment and retreatment of tuberculosis when the medicine cannot be taken by mouth.

Rifampin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Rifampin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Flaxseed — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
