Flaxseed + Tobramycin
Tobramycin brand names: Nebcin, Tobi Podhaler, Bethkis, Kitabis PAK.
Flaxseed has a moderate interaction with Tobramycin. Theoretically, antibiotics might interfere with the metabolism of flaxseed constituents, which could potentially alter the effects of flaxseed.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Tobramycin
Tobramycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.
Some potential benefits of flaxseed are thought to be due to its lignan content. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a major lignan precursor, is found in high concentrations in flaxseed. SDG is converted by bacteria in the colon to the lignans enterolactone and enterodiol. Antibiotics alter the flora of the colon, which could theoretically alter the metabolism of flaxseed.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the good news: this isn't about flaxseed changing how tobramycin works. It's the other way around, and it's pretty mild. The lignans in flaxseed only become their active forms when friendly bacteria in your colon convert them. Antibiotics like tobramycin can shift that gut bacteria balance, so in theory you might get a little less of flaxseed's lignan-related benefit while you're on the antibiotic.
This is theoretical, based on how things work on paper, not on real-world reports. It won't make tobramycin less effective at fighting your infection, and it won't cause the side effects tobramycin is known for (like kidney or hearing concerns). Eating flaxseed for fiber or regularity is still fine. If you have questions, just check with your pharmacist.

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tobramycin page
“Kidney protection is the first thing to understand with tobramycin (Nebcin, Tobi Podhaler, Bethkis, Kitabis PAK), an aminoglycoside antibiotic that can stress the kidneys even on its own, so this list warrants genuine care rather than a quick glance. The worst pairings, Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca, can injure the kidneys themselv…”

About Flaxseed
What is Flaxseed?
- Constipation and digestive health
- High cholesterol
- Heart health
- Menopausal symptoms
- Blood sugar support
Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans. It is most reliably helpful for constipation and may modestly lower cholesterol, but evidence for many other uses is mixed or limited. It is generally safe as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Tobramycin Injection
What Is Tobramycin Injection Used For?
Brand names: Nebcin, Tobi Podhaler, Bethkis, Kitabis PAK
Tobramycin Injection is used to treat serious and life-threatening bacterial infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is approved for adults and children for infections of the blood (septicemia), lungs and airways, brain and spinal cord (meningitis), abdomen, skin, bones, and urinary tract.
Because antibiotic resistance is a growing concern, Tobramycin Injection should only be used when there is a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection. Your care team will use culture and lab results to confirm it is the right choice.

Tobramycin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Tobramycin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Flaxseed — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
