Flaxseed + Nitrofurantoin
Nitrofurantoin brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid.
Flaxseed has a moderate interaction with Nitrofurantoin. Theoretically, antibiotics might interfere with the metabolism of flaxseed constituents, which could potentially alter the effects of flaxseed.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Nitrofurantoin
Nitrofurantoin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.
Some potential benefits of flaxseed are thought to be due to its lignan content. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a major lignan precursor, is found in high concentrations in flaxseed. SDG is converted by bacteria in the colon to the lignans enterolactone and enterodiol. Antibiotics alter the flora of the colon, which could theoretically alter the metabolism of flaxseed.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to understand about this pairing: the worry isn't that flaxseed changes how your nitrofurantoin works, and it isn't that the antibiotic causes more bladder-infection side effects. It actually runs the other direction. Flaxseed's lignan precursors need friendly gut bacteria in your colon to turn them into the active compounds (enterolactone and enterodiol) that some of flaxseed's benefits are tied to.
Since nitrofurantoin can shift the balance of those gut bacteria, it could, in theory, blunt some of flaxseed's effects during your short course of treatment. This is purely a pharmacology guess, not something proven in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Flaxseed as a food is fine, and nitrofurantoin still treats your infection normally. If you have questions, just check with your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nitrofurantoin page
“Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) treats urinary tract infections and can strain the liver on its own, which is why this interaction list deserves genuine care rather than a glance. Of the 82 ingredients on file, 38 can add their own liver stress on top of the drug's, and three of the four major-rated entries fall in that group, i…”

About Flaxseed
What is Flaxseed?
- Constipation and digestive health
- High cholesterol
- Heart health
- Menopausal symptoms
- Blood sugar support
Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans. It is most reliably helpful for constipation and may modestly lower cholesterol, but evidence for many other uses is mixed or limited. It is generally safe as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Nitrofurantoin
What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?
Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid
Nitrofurantoin treats urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by specific susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin and nitrofurantoin macrocrystals capsules) are indicated for UTIs due to Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin capsules (monohydrate/macrocrystals) are indicated only for acute uncomplicated UTIs (acute cystitis) caused by E. coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for UTIs caused by susceptible strains of E. coli, Enterococcus species, S. aureus, Klebsiella species, and Enterobacter species. No form of nitrofurantoin is approved for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections in the tissue surrounding the kidneys (perinephric abscesses).
