Flaxseed and Nifedipine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Nifedipine

Nifedipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, flaxseed might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that daily flaxseed consumption, especially for longer than 12 weeks, modestly reduces blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: nifedipine already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels, and flaxseed may nudge your blood pressure down a little too. Put them together and those effects can add up, so your numbers might drift lower than expected. If that happens, you could feel dizzy, lightheaded, or a bit tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not a strong warning. The blood pressure dip from flaxseed is usually modest and mainly shows up with daily supplement use over many weeks. A sprinkle on your oatmeal is unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated flaxseed regularly, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your readings.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
