DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Fosinopril, Hydrochlorothiazide
Fosinopril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Gamboge interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Let me start with the most important point: gamboge isn't a safe supplement to take by mouth at all. It's a harsh, toxic resin, so I'd steer clear of it regardless of your blood pressure medicine. That said, here's the specific concern with your Monopril HCT. The hydrochlorothiazide part is a water pill that already flushes some potassium out of your body. Gamboge works as a strong, irritating laxative, and heavy diarrhea can drain potassium too. Stacking the two could push your potassium lower than it should be.
Low potassium (hypokalemia) can cause muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not solid clinical proof. Still, the simplest, safest move is to avoid gamboge and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fosinopril, Hydrochlorothiazide page
“Monopril HCT combines two blood pressure medicines, the ACE inhibitor fosinopril and the water pill hydrochlorothiazide, which is why I read its supplement list with genuine wariness rather than a shrug. Eleven of the 238 ingredients on file carry a major rating and deserve your attention first, while most of the 200 rated moderate eit…”

About Gamboge
What is Gamboge?
- Laxative (purgative)
- Expelling intestinal worms
- Traditional wound care
- Use as a yellow dye/pigment
Gamboge is a bright yellow tree resin used historically as a strong laxative and as an artists' pigment, but it is toxic in even modest amounts and is not a safe dietary supplement. Modern interest centers on its compound gambogic acid in laboratory cancer research, which does not make the raw resin safe to take. We recommend avoiding oral use of gamboge.
