Garcinia and Anisindione

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Anisindione

Anisindione falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Anisindione (Miradon) is an older blood thinner that works a lot like warfarin, slowing your blood's ability to clot. Garcinia's main ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, has shown in lab dish studies that it can make platelets less sticky. Put those two together and the worry is that your blood could become a little too thin, raising your bleeding risk.

I want to be honest with you: this concern is theoretical and based on test-tube work, not on real patient cases, so we don't actually know how much it matters in people. Still, with a drug like this where the dose is finely balanced, I'd play it safe. Watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or unusually dark stools, and please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding Garcinia.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Anisindione page

“Anisindione (Miradon) thins the blood to prevent dangerous clots, and blood thinners leave little room between not enough effect and too much bleeding, so this list deserves real care. Of the 218 supplements and herbs on file, 202 can push its anticoagulant effect further and raise bleeding risk.”

  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
