Garcinia + Trazodone HCl
Trazodone HCl brand name: Trazorel.
Trazodone HCl falls into 2 drug categories that Garcinia can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Garcinia interacts with whole categories of medication. Trazodone HCl falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Garcinia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Trazodone HCl
Trazodone HCl falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: trazodone nudges up serotonin in your brain, which is part of how it helps with mood and sleep. Garcinia (the weight-loss fruit extract) may have a mild serotonin effect of its own, so stacking the two could, in theory, push serotonin a little too high. That's what doctors call serotonin syndrome, and warning signs include feeling agitated or shaky, a racing heart, sweating, muscle twitching, or confusion.
Honestly, the evidence here is thin. It comes from a single case report with a different antidepressant, not with trazodone itself, so the real-world risk looks low for most people. Still, since trazodone already raises serotonin, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding garcinia rather than guessing on your own.

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
2 of 2Trazodone HCl also falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern when you pair Garcinia with trazodone: both can be hard on the liver. Garcinia has been linked, in case reports, to liver inflammation (hepatitis) with rising liver enzymes, sometimes even when taken on its own. Trazodone itself can occasionally stress the liver too. Putting two liver-taxing things together may add up and raise the chance of trouble.
To be fair, this is a theoretical worry based on how these act, not strong proof, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, watch for signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, nausea, or unusual tiredness. Don't stop your trazodone on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia, especially if you have any liver issues.

About Garcinia
What is Garcinia?
- Weight loss
- Appetite suppression
- Curbing sugar and carb cravings
- Supporting metabolism
- Traditional cooking and souring agent
Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
