Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have sedative effects. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: Brexanolone (Zulresso) is already a strong sedating medicine. It's given as a slow IV drip in a hospital for postpartum depression, and one of its main concerns is making people very drowsy or even causing sudden loss of consciousness. That's why it's monitored so closely during the infusion.

Goldenseal contains berberine, which in animal studies showed mild sedative effects. This has not been seen in people, so this is a theoretical concern based on how it might behave, not proven in humans. Still, stacking anything that could add to drowsiness on top of brexanolone isn't something to do on your own. Since brexanolone is hospital-administered, your care team will guide what's safe. Please mention any goldenseal use to your doctor or pharmacist first.
