Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have sedative effects. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: Clorazepate (Tranxene) already slows down your brain to ease anxiety, calm seizures, or smooth out alcohol withdrawal. Goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine showed some mild sedative effects of its own. The worry is that stacking the two could add up to extra drowsiness, more grogginess, dizziness, or trouble concentrating.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This concern is purely theoretical, based on animal research, and that calming effect hasn't actually been seen in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but if you do try goldenseal alongside clorazepate, pay attention to how sleepy you feel and don't drive until you know. A quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first is always the safest move.

What Is Clorazepate Used For?

Brand names: Tranxene, Tranxene T-Tab, Tranxene SD

Clorazepate dipotassium tablets are used to manage anxiety disorders or to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. They are also used as an add-on (adjunctive) therapy alongside other medications to help control partial seizures in adults and children aged 9 and older.

In addition, clorazepate dipotassium tablets are used for symptomatic relief during acute alcohol withdrawal — helping to ease the physical symptoms that can occur when someone suddenly stops drinking.
