Why this applies to Pindolol

Pindolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, an analysis of clinical research shows that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. However, this effect has not been reported with goldenseal.

Here's the gist with pindolol and goldenseal. Pindolol is a beta blocker that already works to bring your blood pressure down and slow your heart rate. Goldenseal contains berberine, which in animal studies seems to nudge blood pressure lower too. So the worry is that stacking the two could push your pressure down a little more than you want.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, unusually tired, or faint when you stand up. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves, not something actually reported with goldenseal and pindolol together, so I don't want you to panic. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding goldenseal, and keep an eye on your blood pressure if you do.

Clinical and in vitro research shows that goldenseal can significantly inhibit CYP2D6 enzymes, potentially increasing levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.

Here's the gist for pindolol: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear this beta blocker from your body. Goldenseal can put the brakes on that same enzyme, so pindolol may hang around longer and build up a bit. Pindolol isn't a prodrug, so more of it in your blood usually means a stronger effect.

In real life that could show up as a slower heartbeat, lower blood pressure, dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when you stand up), or feeling unusually tired. The research here points to a likely effect but isn't rock solid. Concentrated goldenseal capsules are far more likely to matter than a tiny amount in a tea blend. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
