Propoxyphene (Darvon N) is an older opioid pain reliever that already slows down your central nervous system. That's why it can make you feel drowsy, foggy, or dizzy, and in higher amounts can slow your breathing. The concern here is that goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine has shown mild sedative effects. Stacked on top of an opioid, the worry is added sleepiness or sluggishness.

I want to be honest with you: this interaction is theoretical. It has not actually been reported in people, so the real-world risk is likely small. Still, since propoxyphene on its own can be quite sedating, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two, and let them know if you notice extra grogginess.

Here's the situation with goldenseal and propoxyphene. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help process this pain medicine. Goldenseal (mainly its berberine) can slow that enzyme down. When that happens, propoxyphene can hang around in your blood longer than usual, which may push up its effects and side effects.

For an opioid like this, that could mean more drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, slowed breathing, or feeling foggy. The evidence here is moderate, not airtight, but it's worth taking seriously since opioids carry real risks. Food-spice amounts aren't the worry; concentrated supplement capsules are. Please don't change anything on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
