Why this applies to Finasteride

Finasteride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down finasteride. Berberine, the active compound in goldthread, may slow that enzyme down a bit, at least based on lab work. If finasteride clears a little slower, levels could drift up slightly. Finasteride isn't a prodrug, so more drug just means a bit more of its usual effects, things like reduced libido, trouble with erections, or breast tenderness.

Honestly, this one is mostly theoretical. It hasn't actually been reported in people, and finasteride is generally well tolerated, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before adding a concentrated goldthread or berberine supplement, so someone who knows your full med list can weigh in.

About Finasteride

What Is Finasteride Used For?

Brand names: Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride tablets (including the brand Proscar) are used in men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) to improve urinary symptoms, lower the risk of acute urinary retention (a sudden inability to urinate), and reduce the need for prostate surgery. Finasteride tablets may also be used alongside the alpha-blocker doxazosin to slow the progression of BPH symptoms.

Propecia (and finasteride 1 mg coated tablets) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Propecia is not approved for use in women, and its effectiveness for hair loss at the temples has not been established. Finasteride is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
