Why this applies to Mometasone

Mometasone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist: berberine, the active piece of goldthread, might gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways that helps clear mometasone from your body. In theory, that could let a bit more mometasone hang around. But I want to ease your mind here, because the type of mometasone used for skin issues like eczema and psoriasis (Elocon cream or ointment) is applied right on the skin, so very little gets into your bloodstream to begin with.

This interaction is only theoretical, drawn from lab work, and hasn't actually shown up in people. With the topical cream, I wouldn't expect trouble. If you use the inhaled version (Asmanex) for asthma, or you're using a lot of cream over large areas for a long time, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up before adding goldthread.

What Is Mometasone Topical Used For?

Brand names: Elocon, Asmanex

Mometasone Furoate topical products are used to relieve the inflammation and itching (pruritus) that come with corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses — a broad category of skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment.

Mometasone Furoate Topical Solution (Lotion) is specifically indicated for these skin conditions in patients 12 years of age and older. Mometasone Furoate cream may be used in adults and in children 2 years of age and older.
