Griffonia Simplicifolia and Lorazepam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Lorazepam

Lorazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Griffonia Simplicifolia interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract with CNS depressants might increase the risk of additive CNS depression.
Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract contains 5-HTP. In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both of these can make you sleepy, so using them together may pile that effect on. Lorazepam (Ativan) already slows down brain activity to ease anxiety, and the 5-HTP in Griffonia seeds has been linked to drowsiness in studies. Stack them and you might feel more tired, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet than you'd expect from the lorazepam alone.

To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on how the two work rather than strong human studies, so it isn't a guaranteed problem. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you drive, take other calming medicines, or are older and more prone to falls.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lorazepam page

“Lorazepam (Ativan) works by slowing brain activity, and that is exactly why this list deserves real caution. Of the 119 supplement and herbal ingredients on file, 78 are themselves nervous-system depressants, so adding them can deepen drowsiness or, at the extreme, slow breathing.”

About Griffonia Simplicifolia

What is Griffonia Simplicifolia?

Griffonia Simplicifolia
  • Low mood
  • Sleep problems
  • Anxiety
  • Appetite control
  • Headaches

Griffonia simplicifolia is a West African shrub whose seeds are a natural source of 5-HTP, a building block of the brain chemical serotonin. Some people use it for mood, sleep, and appetite, but high-quality human evidence is limited, and it should not replace prescribed treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take medicines that affect serotonin.

About Lorazepam

What Is Lorazepam Used For?

Brand name: Ativan

Lorazepam tablets (Ativan and generic) and the oral solution are used to manage anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, including anxiety that comes with depressive symptoms. Loreev XR, an extended-release capsule, is specifically indicated for adults with anxiety disorders who are already stable on lorazepam tablets taken three times daily.

Ativan and generic lorazepam injections are used in two additional situations: treating status epilepticus (a medical emergency involving prolonged or repeated seizures) and as a pre-surgery medication in adults to produce sedation, ease anxiety, and reduce memory of events on the day of surgery.
