Here's the gist with guarumo and zonisamide. Zonisamide already tends to make people feel drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or low on energy. In one animal study, a water-based guarumo extract had a calming, muscle-relaxing effect on the nervous system. So the worry is simple: stacking the two could add up to more sedation than you'd get from your seizure medicine alone.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is only a theoretical concern based on an animal study, not something proven in people, so I wouldn't panic. Still, since zonisamide is a serious seizure medication, please run guarumo by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and watch for extra grogginess or trouble concentrating if you do.

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. What Is Zonisamide Used For?

Brand names: Zonegran, Zonisade

Zonisamide is used as add-on therapy — meaning it is combined with other seizure medications, not used alone — to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults with epilepsy. Zonegran (capsule) and generic zonisamide capsules are approved for adults with epilepsy.

Zonisade (oral suspension) is approved as add-on therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and in patients 16 years of age and older.
