DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Moexipril
Hydrochlorothiazide, Moexipril falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Hedge Mustard interacts with.
The flowering above ground parts of hedge mustard contain cardioactive glycosides. Theoretically, concomitant use of potassium depleting diuretics and hedge mustard can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about your Uniretic, which combines hydrochlorothiazide (a 'water pill') with moexipril (a blood pressure medicine). The hydrochlorothiazide part can lower your body's potassium levels over time. Hedge mustard naturally contains small amounts of heart-active compounds called cardiac glycosides, and low potassium can make those compounds more potent and potentially toxic to the heart.
So in theory, pairing the two could raise the risk of heart rhythm problems, like an irregular or pounding heartbeat. I want to stress this is a theoretical concern based on how these chemicals work, not strong human studies. Still, since this is a heart and blood pressure situation, it's worth running it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding hedge mustard, especially in concentrated supplement form rather than an occasional throat tea.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Hydrochlorothiazide, Moexipril page
“Uniretic pairs hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill, with moexipril, an ACE inhibitor, so it lowers blood pressure two ways at once, and that combination earns real caution with supplements. Of the 248 herbs and supplements with an interaction on file, 16 rate major, and those are the ones to understand first.”

About Hedge Mustard
What is Hedge Mustard?
- Hoarseness and voice loss
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Mild laryngitis
- Throat irritation
Hedge mustard is a traditional European herb long nicknamed the 'singer's plant' because it was used to soothe hoarseness and sore throats. Solid scientific evidence for these uses is very limited, so it is best seen as a folk remedy rather than a proven treatment. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
