Isotretinoin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C8 (CYP2C8) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa might reduce the metabolism of CYP2C8 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP2C8. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C8 to help clear isotretinoin (Accutane and its generics). In a lab dish, hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more isotretinoin linger in your system, which might nudge up its usual side effects like very dry lips and skin, dry eyes, nosebleeds, achy joints, or higher blood fats.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only test-tube evidence, it has never actually been seen in people, and it's rated as a minor concern. A cup or two of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated hibiscus capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or dermatologist so they can keep an eye on things.

About Isotretinoin

What Is Isotretinoin Used For?

Brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, Roaccutane

Isotretinoin capsules — sold under brand names including Absorica, Absorica LD, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, and others — are used to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne (deep, inflamed acne nodules 5 mm or larger) in non-pregnant patients 12 years of age and older whose acne has not responded to conventional treatments, including systemic antibiotics.

This medication is reserved for serious cases — those with many nodules, not just a few. A single 15- to 20-week course has been shown to produce complete and prolonged clearing in many patients. If a second course is ever needed, it should not be started until at least two months after finishing the first, because acne may continue to improve even after stopping.
