Taking Hibiscus sabdariffa tea along with chloroquine seems to reduce levels of chloroquine.
When taken together, Hibiscus sabdariffa tea significantly reduces the bioavailability of chloroquine. This may reduce its clinical effects. People taking chloroquine for the treatment or prevention of malaria should avoid Hibiscus sabdariffa tea.

Here's the practical takeaway: drinking hibiscus tea alongside your chloroquine appears to lower how much of the drug your body actually absorbs. A small human study found that hibiscus cut chloroquine's bioavailability quite a bit, meaning less of the medicine reaches your bloodstream to do its job.

Why this matters: chloroquine isn't a prodrug, so less absorption simply means a weaker effect. When you're using it to prevent or treat malaria, a lower level could let the parasite slip through, raising the risk of treatment failure or a malaria infection that isn't fully controlled. That's a serious thing to gamble with. While casual sips of hibiscus tea may matter less than concentrated doses, the safest move is to skip hibiscus while on chloroquine and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Chloroquine

What Is Chloroquine Used For?

Brand names: Aralen Phosphate, Aralen Phosphate Injection, Aralen HCL, Avloclor, Malarivon, Nivaquine

Chloroquine Phosphate tablets are used to treat uncomplicated malaria caused by susceptible strains of P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. vivax. They are also used to prevent malaria when traveling to areas where chloroquine-resistant strains are not present.

Chloroquine Phosphate tablets are also approved for extraintestinal amebiasis — an infection with Entamoeba histolytica that has spread outside the intestines, such as to the liver. Important limitations apply: these tablets are not for complicated malaria, not for use in regions where chloroquine resistance is widespread, and they do not prevent malaria relapses caused by P. vivax or P. ovale without an additional medicine.
