Clindamycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with hibiscus and clindamycin. Your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down and clear clindamycin. In a test tube, hibiscus extract slowed that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in people, clindamycin could be cleared a bit slower and build up slightly, which in theory could mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, diarrhea, or stomach upset.

The reassuring part is that this is only a theoretical concern from lab studies, and it has never actually been reported in real patients. A cup or two of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated hibiscus supplements alongside an antibiotic, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Clindamycin is prescribed for serious infections caused by certain bacteria — including anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that thrive without oxygen), streptococci, staphylococci, and pneumococci. It's often chosen when penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used, such as in people with a penicillin allergy.

It can treat infections of the lungs, skin and soft tissue, bloodstream, abdomen, and female reproductive organs. Because it carries real risks, doctors reserve it for infections where safer antibiotics aren't appropriate.
