Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP1A2. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with hibiscus tea and your naproxen. In lab studies, hibiscus extract can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear naproxen. If that pathway slows, naproxen could theoretically hang around a bit longer and build up slightly. Naproxen isn't a prodrug, so more drug in your system would mean a touch more of its usual effects, things like stomach upset, heartburn, or in larger amounts a higher chance of stomach irritation.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern seen in a test tube, never actually reported in people, and it's rated minor. A cup of hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated hibiscus supplements daily, just mention it to your pharmacist.

Your body clears naproxen largely through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab dish studies, concentrated hibiscus extract appears to slow that same enzyme down. The theory is that if naproxen breaks down more slowly, a bit more could linger in your system, which might nudge up its usual side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, or fluid retention.

Here's the honest part: this has only been seen in test tubes, never in real people, so it's a weak, theoretical concern. A cup or two of hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Stronger hibiscus capsules are where I'd be a little more cautious. If you take naproxen regularly, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a hibiscus supplement.

About Naproxen

What Is Naproxen Used For?

Brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, Navalbine, Naproxen, Naprosyn EC, Napro-Na, Aleve, Arthroxen, Synflex, EC-Naprosyn

Naproxen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, and naproxen oral suspension are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They are also used for tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout, and for managing pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

Naproxen Sodium Controlled-Release Tablets are indicated for the same conditions plus the relief of mild to moderate pain. Several over-the-counter naproxen sodium products are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains from headache, backache, muscular aches, toothache, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever.
