Higenamine and Aspirin, Caffeine

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Higenamine interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Higenamine in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

1 of 3

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine

Aspirin, Caffeine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the short version on combining higenamine with this Anacin-style product (which pairs aspirin with caffeine). In lab dishes, higenamine slowed down the CYP3A4 enzyme a little, by about 21%. In theory, slowing that enzyme could let certain drugs build up. But honestly, this is very early test-tube data, not something seen in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over the metabolism angle here.

My bigger concern is overlap, not enzymes. Both higenamine and caffeine are stimulants, so stacking them can leave you feeling jittery, racing-hearted, or with a higher blood pressure. Higenamine itself has real heart concerns and shaky labeling. Please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

2 of 3

Aspirin, Caffeine also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the risk of bleeding or bruising when taken with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that higenamine inhibits platelet aggregation and reduces the size of thrombus formation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this combo: your Anacin already contains aspirin, which thins the blood a bit by keeping platelets from clumping together. Higenamine, at least in animal studies, seems to do something similar. So in theory, stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher, meaning easier bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that takes longer to stop.

I want to be honest, though: this concern is theoretical and based on lab and animal research, not solid human data. There's also a caffeine angle worth noting, since higenamine is a stimulant and so is the caffeine in Anacin, so together they could leave you feeling jittery or raise your heart rate. If you take Anacin regularly, just check with your pharmacist before adding higenamine.

STIMULANT DRUGS

3 of 3

Aspirin, Caffeine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the risk of cardiovascular toxicity when taken with stimulant drugs.
Higenamine has stimulant effects due to agonist activity at beta2-adrenoreceptors. In cardiac muscle, higenamine appears to have a positive inotropic effect and increase heart rate. However, it does not appear to increase blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS

The product you're asking about (Anacin) pairs aspirin with caffeine, and caffeine is the piece that matters here. Caffeine is a stimulant that already nudges up your heart rate and can make you feel jittery or restless. Higenamine is also a stimulant that revs the heart in a similar way, so stacking the two could pile on those effects: a faster or pounding heartbeat, the jitters, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not strong human studies. Caffeine isn't a prodrug, so nothing here changes the aspirin's job. Still, since higenamine doses on labels are often wrong, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you have any heart or blood pressure history.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Caffeine page

“Anacin combines aspirin with caffeine, so supplements can hit it from two directions, and a few of the 347 on this list deserve real respect. The biggest group, over 200 ingredients, can raise bleeding risk on top of aspirin's blood-thinning effect; beer and wine carry major ratings because alcohol plus an aspirin-type drug makes stoma…”

About Higenamine

What is Higenamine?

  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Pre-workout energy and performance
  • Appetite suppression
  • Athletic stimulant
  • Traditional medicine remedies

Higenamine is a plant-based stimulant compound added to many weight-loss and pre-workout supplements, but there is very little human evidence that it works and real concerns about heart and blood pressure effects. It is banned in sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and product labels often list inaccurate amounts, so most people should approach it with caution and talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.
