Telithromycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body clears telithromycin (Ketek) largely through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish testing, higenamine slowed that same enzyme down by about 21%. If that held true in real life, telithromycin could build up a bit more than expected, which in theory could nudge up side effects like nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, or changes in your heart rhythm.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This was only seen in a test tube, never confirmed in actual people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, higenamine is a heart-stimulating supplement with shaky safety data, and telithromycin can affect heart rhythm on its own, so I'd run this combo past your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

  • Telithromycin is used to treat certain types of pneumonia (an infection of the lungs) that is caused by bacteria. Telithromycin is in a class of medications called ketolide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as telithromycin not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
